The Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate leads NASA’s human spaceflight and space-enabling activities across low Earth orbit, the Moon, and beyond. The directorate provides unified leadership for the agency’s systems, operations, and architectures to deliver on the next era of human spaceflight.
In May 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced an agencywide realignment to increase mission focus and move out on the National Space Policy. These changes positioned the agency to better deliver on the nation’s highest‑priority objectives with speed and efficiency.
The realignment unified the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate and Space Operations Mission Directorate as the Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate.
